The 2015 Harcourts Open Midlands Gardens is full of fabulous new gardens to delight, tempt and inspire you! The area has spread to Mooi River: two old farm property owners share with you their different styles of gardens. From the time of the Garden Show, we have arranged a series of gardens clustered in different areas. This is for ease of viewing, to save petrol and also to maximise the gardens at the best time of their flowering. The further north we go, the later the gardens are at their spring best. This also means that you have a gardening treat in store for most weekends during October and for the whole of November. The Garden Show ( 23-25 October 2015) is usually much earlier than when most of our gardens are at their peak. This year however, we have made a special effort to ensure that special gardens displaying their early spring finery are included on the list. So after you have visited the Show a jaunt into the country awaits you!
In the olden days, Maritzburg was known as the City of Flowers and a new development this year has been instigated in a small way to resurrect this concept and celebrate flowers in abundance as we used to do. In conjunction with the Hilton Quarry Centre, the Midlands Rose Society will be holding a Rose Show during the weekend of Open Gardens in Hilton – 24-25 October. There has not been an Rose Show here for about eight years and there will be a Plant Fair with a wide range of different plants for your gardens as well as a host of other activities!
So pack your picnic baskets and head for the hills and spend time in these beautiful gardens – all an expression of how people use and share their space. One of South Africa’s loveliest garden areas awaits your – not for nothing is KwaZulu-Natal known as South Africa’s Garden Province and don’t forget by buying your Season Ticket many charities will give thanks to your kindness
